The International Mandela Day initiative involves citizens pledging to volunteer 67 minutes of their time engaged in worthwhile causes.

Voluntary and Community Organisations, charities and those alike would identity volunteering opportunities e.g. reading to the elderly, helping them with outreach work or their cultural programs and citizens would have the opportunity to pledge 67 minutes of their time to carry out specific tasks.

It’s in your hands to make a difference.

    關於活動 About:

I always wanted to do something to honour one of my all time heroes, Nelson Mandela. This idea came when Kelvin Schafli, one of our fellow hikers who is from South Africa, sent me an email about Mandela and how the hiking club can honour him on the Saturday preceding his birthday.

I thought I might as well organize a hike in honor of Mandela on his birthday and also help to coordinate a voluntary project so Kelvin and pals could do community works in honoring Mandela from this year on.

My personal encounter with Mandela went back some 20 years ago when I just got married with Galia and we were traveling in Shanghai (nothing near modern as it is today). Yes it was 20 years ago I shook hand with Mandela when he was just released from the prison but not yet the President. He was paying a visit to Shanghai and happened we were in the same hotel. Moment in time we were in same lift. He had no body guards around. I recognized him and offered my hand and he took it graciously with a biggest smile I’d ever seen. That moment is still frozen in time and in my mind. It is an experience I will never forget.
