曼德拉先生向來重視兒童教育, 有見及此, 曼德拉圖書館計劃 (Mandela Day Libraries) 於2011年度的國際曼德拉日正式成立。 納爾遜•曼德拉的記憶中心 (The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory) 較早前於南非挑選了九所學校各成為該計劃的受惠機構。每所學校獲Breadline 公司贊助一架由貨櫃改裝而成的圖書館, 再由商業機構和社區人士參與協助為貨櫃掃上油漆, 在「圖書館」周邊建立圍欄和遊樂場設施，提供書架、捐贈書籍、海報和電腦。 在一班志願者的努力下, 才用了一個月, 便把貨櫃變成一全新的圖書館。
至今已建立了13間貨櫃圖書館。
The Mandela Day Library project was started in 18 July 2011. The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory has chosen nine schools to each receive a converted container, supplied by Breadline Africa. These containers are being transformed into libraries, with the aid of companies and communities who will help to paint the containers, build fences and playgrounds around them, provide bookshelves and donate books, posters and computers.
The containers were delivered at the beginning of July and once the volunteers had worked their magic, the new libraries were opened one by one throughout the month. Today, there are 13 libraries built.
